Get to know the breed properly so that you are familiar with its temperament, habits and any health issues it may have. Also check the genetic background of the stud and dam, to ensure that they are of good quality. Remember the parents will pass down their genes to the puppies so make sure you are satisfied with both the dogs first, when deciding how to breed dogs.

Another tip on how to breed dogs is to ensure that the dogs are of breeding age. It is best to wait until the dam is at least 1 ½ to years old as she will be fully mature then and be able to cope with the pressure and stress of carrying and birthing pups. When deciding how to breed dogs, also ensure that your dam is taken to a vet for a check to make sure that she is completely healthy and free of any infections or parasites. Also make sure she has been given all her shots at least 2 weeks before breeding.

Once your dam is in heat, leave the stud with her for a day or two, giving them enough time to breed. Once you are certain that the dam has been bred you can remove the stud or send him back to his owner.
